While planting churches in the southern Philippines (1986-1999), David and Mindy Nelson were convinced of local church based training as a means to growing healthy, vibrant churches. Later with the Bible Training Centre for Pastors (1999-2005), David served as the Asian Coordinator, equipping and mentoring national pastors throughout Asia. As the Bible Training Centre for Pastors refined their strategy to only resource US ministries working with nationals, God directed David and Mindy to start Crossing Cultures International (October 2005) which is now training 2,500 pastors in 11 countries throughout Asia.

Fireworks are being set off in many parts of the city. It is the celebration of the Hindu holiday called Diwali. As we travel down the road to the church building to train 50 pastors, we pass many sites along the way that we don't usually see in America. Cows are along the way, scrummagging through the trash or walking in the middle of the street. People are walking down the road; vehicles of all kinds of shapes and colors fill the road. Vendors are on the side of the road. We are in Lucknow, India. Ryder Kumar (director of Shepherding the Nations based in Reseda, CA) and I are training 50 pastors. Mindy, Flory (Ryder's wife) and Rae (friend from Tampa) are leading a ladies' seminar on Eph. 6:10-20 on the armor of God.

Indian pastors studying BTCP

Pastors have come from up to 1,000 miles away to be here for this training. We are now in book 5- Bible Doctrine Survey. We train 8 hours a day, but we will only cover 1/2 of this 300 page training manual, as we discuss the Bible's teaching about God, the Bible, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and Angels. In March, we will return for part two of this book.

One pastor shared how villagers have destroyed all the instruments and equipment of the building where his church meets and robbed them of $1,000. In the face of fear of persecution, he and his family continue to stand strong by the power of the Holy Spirit. The church continues to meet in the same building. "For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him" (Phil. 1:29). The church has grown since this took place. Six new people came and said that they had decided to believe in Christ and be baptized.

This is a common occurrence in this country - something we don't see much. While many believers in India face tremendous pressure, persecution and hardships, we live in a country that has experienced the blessing of God for many years. We must use the time and resources that God has blessed us with to be a blessing to others while we enjoy the blessing and protection of God. Or are they the ones "blessed"? Persecution is a blessing in disguise and wealth can become a trap instead of a blessing.

Pray for the church in India. Pray for pastors to stand strong. Pray for their witness - in word and in deed- to an unbelieving world. Pray for us as we continue to equip church leaders for impacting ministry.

Leaving a Legacy

MaxCCI supports 20 key national staff members in Asia, the purchase and shipping of thousands of manuals, Study Bibles for students who speak English, printing of manuals locally, some class and teacher support, 12 US staff members, and new translations to reach new language groups. 3,100 students in 18 countries are being trained and 1,600 graduates have completed the training in 8 countries through local staff and ministry partners. Over 164 churches have been planted in the Philippines alone and these 4,700 leaders are each impacting at least 50 people in their area as pastors, church planters, evangelist, teachers, and church leaders. Your gift is helping to reach at least 200,000 people in Asia to hear the Word of God more clearly.
